4 (E-)learning trends for 2023. Here's what we expect from them.

The e-learning landscape is constantly changing. In addition to the application of advanced techniques in e-learning, the personalization of e-learning will also become more and more extensive. What do we expect in 2023?

1. Personalized learning paths

Learning paths are becoming increasingly personalized for students. Learning paths are a form of online education in which different learning activities and assessment/feedback are offered to students in a structured way so that they can process them independently. By making learning paths more personalized, education matches the student's needs, abilities and interests. Students can also determine (in part) how their learning is designed.

Personalized learning paths allow the student to take lessons in a variety of work formats. A learning management system (LMS) stores student usage data and incorporates it into his or her learning profile. The student's learning path is then adjusted accordingly. For example, one student may prefer to learn in text format, while another may prefer to learn through video presentations or in an online classroom. An LMS will put these preferred formats in the learning path and present them to the student.

2. Customization and training plan

The current tight labor market is a considerable challenge for many organizations in the Netherlands. Finding new well-trained personnel is not without its challenges. For example, how do you ensure that once new employees are in, they stay in? Invest in learning and development opportunities! That way you can keep employees interested and keep them with you longer.

Sometimes you have a situation for which standard training is not enough. Then customization offers a solution. This can be a short introduction to your company, or a training on a particular process, or a longer training that explores a subject in depth. For example, you show practical examples on your shop floor of the material explained in the training. This is immediately recognizable for your employees and makes it easier for them to make the link between the material and practice.

A training plan is part of the training policy. The training plan specifies what knowledge and competencies are necessary for the performance of certain functions and what training, courses and learning solutions can be used to meet these knowledge and competencies. A training plan often applies for a period of several years. With a training plan, you give new, but also current employees the confidence that they can continue to develop and be valued within your organization.

3. 360-degree photos

The use of 360-degree photos in e-learning is becoming increasingly popular. This is because by using 360-degree photos, you increase near transfer among learners. This means that what they learned in one situation can be applied well in a new situation. By displaying the immediate work environment in 360°, it is immediately recognizable to trainees where and how to apply the knowledge.

360-degree photos allow employees to digitally navigate through a real work environment, such as a manufacturing environment or a warehouse. The images show every detail of an environment. Moreover, interactions can be added, such as clickable or draggable objects, texts and commands. The advantage is that this allows you to have employees perform practical actions digitally without having to create real-world situations for employees to practice with.

For example, if you work in a kitchen and you need to know how to clean the kitchen in a food-safe way, you can click through the environment and learn the information (and clean the kitchen) in an interactive way. That way, you'll instantly know how to do this in practice

4. Mobile learning

The demand for e-learning via mobile devices is growing and will also be high by 2023. With mobile learning, a learner is no longer tied to a specific location or time to take a training course. Especially for employees who work remotely and do not have direct access to a computer, e-learning via their smartphone or tablet is a godsend.

Moreover, advanced e-learning techniques are increasingly leveraging the capabilities of mobile devices. Think, for example, of scanning a QR code with your smartphone or tablet to then get an instructional video or more information about a device or action. Augmented reality also makes use of mobile devices. This involves overlaying a digital image over the camera image of your smartphone or tablet when you scan an environment or object with the camera. You can still see the environment on your device, but additional (digital) information is added. If your employees learn best by seeing or experiencing something, then such techniques via smartphone or tablet can be very interesting.

So having e-learning developed for mobile devices is definitely something to consider. Mobile learning makes learning for your employees flexible, and it offers your employees new and especially more visual opportunities to learn.
