As an importer, manufacturer or brand owner of toys, you face many legal obligations. We are happy to help.
What are safe toys?
To answer this question, you need to know what toys are and especially what are safe toys. Under the General Product Safety Directive, we have a number of New Approach Directives, including the Toys Directive 2009/48. The Toys Directive defines toys as follows:
"Products designed or intended, exclusively or otherwise, to be used in play by children under 14 years of age."
The Toys Directive sets out the essential safety requirements that toys marketed within the European Union must meet. Toys and the chemicals they contain must not present a risk to the safety or health of users or third parties when used in accordance with their intended purpose or when used as could be expected given children's behavior.
The requirements cover the following aspects:
- Physical and mechanical properties
- Flammability
- Chemical properties
- Electrical properties
- Hygiene
- Radioactivity
