Update EN716-1 & EN 1888 baby and children's products

Recently, the new versions of EN 716-1: safety requirements for cribs and folding cribs and EN 1888: safety requirements for baby carriages and strollers have been published. We picked out the changes for you, but what exactly are the most important changes?

The new version of EN 716-1 was published on March 6, 2019 and conflicting national standards must be withdrawn by December 31, 2019. EN 1888 is now split into two parts EN 1888-1 and EN 1888-2. Both parts were published on December 19, 2018. EN 1888-1 is subject to withdrawal of conflicting national standards by December 31, 2019, and EN 1888-2 was subject to withdrawal by June 30, 2019. EN 1888-2 applies in conjunction with, and in addition to, European standard EN 1888-1 and cannot be used separately.

Main changes and requirements

The main change in the updated version of EN 716-1 is:

  • Changing the distance between footrests and top of cradle sides and end: The distance in the previous standard was 500 mm, but in the new version the distance may be less than 500 mm. Only if the distance is less than 500 mm from the top rail, then there should be no other footrest within 500 mm below the highest footrest. A footrest can be used as a step for the child to climb over the top of crib sides or end.

EN 1888-1 now contains the requirements for wheeled child transport (up to 15 kg) and baby carriage seats (up to 20 kg). This contains the main changes compared to the old standard:

  • Chemical hazards; The migration limit of lead, among others, has been reduced by 80%.
  • Entrapment hazard; No more openings are allowed in rigid materials. This is to prevent entrapment of baby's fingers, for example.
  • Hazards from moving parts; Addition regarding shear hazards for hoods or similar parts.
  • Entanglement hazards; A maximum length requirement of 220 mm has been added for cords, ribbons or similar parts attached to each other or within 80 mm of each other.
  • Stability of the vehicle; An addition that caster wheels must be able to rotate without blocking each other.

Standard EN 1888-2 contains safety requirements for wheeled child transportation (from 15 kg to 22 kg). The main updates in the new standard are:

  • Introduction of security system regulations and testing methods;
  • Introduction of regulations and test methods for parking and braking devices;
  • Addition of requirements and test methods to verify product stability;
  • Addition of requirements and test methods of the irregular surface test;
  • Addition of requirements and test methods of the dynamic force test;
  • Addition of handle strength test requirements and test methods;

Then we recommend that you assess whether these products require additional testing for the changes and/or requirements mentioned above.
