REACH deadline passed: now what?

10 years after the start of REACH, the last REACH registration deadline passed on May 31, 2018. Since 2008, more than 13,000 European companies have collectively registered a total of nearly 22,000 substances with the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA). This does not mean that the obligation to register expired after May 31, 2018. As of today, REACH registration of chemical substances must be completed before these substances, or products containing these substances, may be placed on the European market. No data, no market!

What is REACH?

REACH stands for Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals. This is a European Union regulation, adopted to better protect human and environmental health from risks that chemicals may pose and to improve the competitiveness of the EU chemical industry.

Registration requirement or not?

Do you manufacture chemicals for your own use or for supply to others? Do you import chemicals or products that release chemicals from outside the EU? If so, you probably have a number of important responsibilities under REACH. Whether you are required to register a substance with ECHA depends on the following factors, among others:

  • Your role in the supply chain;
  • The volume of fabric produced or imported;
  • The scope and any exceptions.

Complex registration process

Once it has become clear that you have a REACH registration obligation, it is important to determine which substances you must and want to register. This can be done using a REACH substance administration, in which you keep track of the volumes of substances you produce or import. You do a registration alone or with co-registrants. The registration must ultimately be prepared and submitted in IUCLID format. Even after the registration is approved, it must be kept permanently up to date.

Need help?

Maintaining REACH substance records has become even more important since May 31, 2018. This is the only way to timely signal whether you need to register a substance so that you may continue to produce or import it. Among other things, Précon Quality Services can support you in designing a substance administration, with making analyses of the total volumes and in the registration process with ECHA, so that your products are compliant.
