A hallmark of an international supply chain is the creation of jobs in developing countries. Textiles from India, electronic components from China and wood from Indonesia. It may be obvious to source products from faraway countries, but do we know the supply chain well enough? And do we know how and under what conditions the products are made? Are workers treated fairly and according to laws? In international trade, it is important to pay attention to the hidden negative side effects that can occur in the supply chain, from raw materials to finished product. Think about what impact the product has on the environment, working conditions and human rights. What position and power does the government have in the producing countries? And how can you as a company contribute positively in the supply chain?
At the European level, there are visible developments on mandating due diligence in the supply chain. A voluntary approach to performing due diligence is proving insufficient. For international trade, companies are encouraged to look beyond sec trade companies. But also to assume their responsibilities by knowing the CSR risks and anticipating and minimizing them where necessary.
Moving into CSR activities is a common goal of the company, which must be encouraged top-down. The first step is to look internally at the extent to which Corporate Social Responsibility plays a role, and what ownership the company is willing to take. The second step is to determine which departments and processes align with the desired CSR activities and who has what responsibilities.
Précon's Quickscan provides insight into the cohesion of business units and activities and the transparency of the social and environmental aspects of the supply chain. It also helps determine the scope and priorities that are important when performing due diligence in supply chains.
