New fire safety standards and product safety labeling for outdoor candles

In January 2022, the new European standards NEN-EN 17616:2022 and NEN-EN 17617:2022 were published. These standards contain specifications for the fire safety and product safety labeling of outdoor candles. These two European standards will be incorporated as national standards by June 2022 and conflicting standards will then be withdrawn.

NEN-EN 17616 Outdoor candles - Specifications for fire safety.

This standard establishes the requirements and test methods for the fire safety of candles intended for outdoor use. The test methods consider the candle's design, stability and flammability.

The standard applies to the following types of outdoor candles:

• Container candles
• Flare-up
• Floating candle
• Freestanding candles
• Garden torches
• Grave light

NEN-EN 17617 Outdoor candles - Product safety labels

The NEN-EN 17617 lays down the requirements for the use of warnings and the layout of the associated symbols for outdoor candles. The warning symbol should always be used with the symbols or texts of the additional safety information. In addition, there are mandatory warnings and any optional additional warnings. These may be placed either in the form of symbols or text. If text is used it must be in the national language of the country of sale.
