In-Cosmetics Global 2019: sustainability and the cosmetics industry

Précon attended the annual In-Cosmetics Global Exposition in Paris. This leading trade show focuses on ingredients used in personal care products. The event brings together suppliers of ingredients with manufacturers of finished products. In-Cosmetics Global continues to attract visitors from around the world, looking to expand their network, find new ingredients for their products and innovations from international suppliers not seen at other shows.

In addition to the usual meetings during a trade show, workshops and seminars will be held on various topics: laws and regulations for cosmetic products, marketing trends, sustainability and new product development technologies will all pass by.

Sustainability is a 'hot topic'

During this edition of In-Cosmetics Global, sustainability was the most discussed topic. Thus, companies presented many sustainable alternatives to commonly used, less sustainable cosmetic ingredients. The "Sustainability Corner" specifically addressed this topic.

The "Sustainability Corner" is an interactive space dedicated to the cosmetics industry's creativity and progress in environmental and social sustainability. Visitors could attend presentations by leading brands and participate in discussions on the most important aspects of sustainability. The seminars in this corner covered a wide variety of topics: from sustainability as a USP to pearl starch as an alternative to microbeads in cosmetics.

How is the cosmetics industry shaped by sustainability?

Dr. Barbara Olioso gave a presentation on how sustainability is shaping the cosmetics industry. It is clear that consumers are increasingly considering the influences of their consumption behavior on the environment and the environment. This is one of the reasons moving the cosmetic industry to focus more intensively on the responsible and sustainable production of cosmetics.

With current developments, many companies are looking for opportunities to conduct business responsibly throughout the production chain. From the participants in the seminars, the most common responses in this regard were:

  • Reduce the use of plastic in packaging;
  • Develop safe and natural products;
  • Be transparent.

Where is sustainability going in the cosmetics industry?

Many brands are working on making their product more sustainable, but do not yet emphasize this in their expressions. However, there are also plenty of companies where sustainability underlies the brand they want to sell. With the continued expansion of sustainable offerings, consumers are increasingly choosing the sustainable option. Consumers are expected to become increasingly discerning. Entrepreneurs can distinguish themselves by responding to this and offering more and more sustainable products. In the longer term, the industry expects that sustainable cosmetics will no longer be distinctive, but the standard.

As rightly noted during this edition of In-Cosmetics Global, "there is no planet B."
