What is a product recall?

A product recall is a recall of a product. When a product is potentially unsafe, it must be withdrawn from the market before consumers can be inconvenienced.

This could mean, for example, removing the products from the store. If the consumer has already bought the product, the consumer should be informed about the possible unsafe product. These notifications are communicated in the media and also through the stores.

The consequences of a product recall are not only high costs, but also the image of the product or company can be damaged. This can damage customer and consumer confidence. Therefore, preventing a product recall is better than a cure.

Of course, it is important to have your quality assurance and quality control in order. This reduces the risk of recalls. It is also important to register all customer complaints about defects in your products, analyze them and take timely action. In this way, you can hopefully prevent actual accidents with your product - and the associated damage to your image.

Product recall process.

If a product recall really is unavoidable, then it is important that the recall is handled correctly in order to limit image damage. But what is involved in conducting a successful product recall?

Measures prior to a product recall:

  • a well-established organization,
  • Establish clear procedures,
  • Inform and familiarize employees with the procedures and act accordingly,
  • develop crisis plan,
  • set up complaint system.

Measures during product recall:

  • Finding out the cause of product unsafety as soon as possible,
  • informing employees, as well as buyers and the insurer,
  • informing consumers,
  • informing the government.

Measures after the product recall:

  • Evaluation, to improve the product and process.
  • Settlement of damages suffered.

Important for producers and distributors.

A proper recall procedure is relevant to both manufacturers and distributors. By law, the responsibility for initiating a product recall lies with the producer. If the product comes from outside the European Union, the importer is sometimes considered by law to be the producer.

Distributors also have duties. Among other things, they must register customer complaints, pass them on to their supplier and ensure that questions are answered adequately. If, as the distributor, you have knowledge of an unsafe product, you are obligated to report it to the regulator and have a duty to cooperate in carrying out an initiated product recall.
