Voluntary labeling of country of origin or place of origin

On April 8, 2019, the EU Commission Working Group on Consumer Food Information discussed Q&As for the purpose of interpreting rules for the application of Article 26.3 of Regulation (EU) No. 1169/2011 on food information to consumers. Article 26.3 deals with the general rules on voluntary labeling of country of origin or place of provenance. The rules for application of Article 26.3 are laid down in Implementing Regulation (EU) 2018/775. The Q&As should create clarity in interpretation of the legislation. Most importantly, consumers should not be misled by voluntary origin labeling. The Commission aims to adopt the Q&As in November 2019.

On April 1, 2020, Implementing Regulation (EU) 2018/775 will apply.
