On Dec. 1, 2020, The House of Representatives agreed to State Secretary Paul Blokhuis' proposal to amend the Alcoholic Beverage and Catering Act. The bill still needs to be approved by the Senate, but cannot be amended anymore. After Senate approval, the law is expected to enter into force on July 1, 2021, under the renamed "the Alcohol Act."
What is striking is that the future Alcohol Act does not include anything about mandatory labeling of alcoholic beverages. However, MPs Niels van den Berge and Wim-Jan Renkema did submit a motion asking the government to investigate the possibility of mandatory labeling of alcoholic beverages. It specifically addresses two points, namely:
The House of Representatives passed this motion and now it remains to be seen whether it will be made mandatory in the Netherlands.
