Impact of Brexit on food labeling

In a few weeks, March 29, 2019, the time will probably come; the United Kingdom will leave the European Union without a deal. A "no-deal" Brexit, in other words.

This no-deal Brexit will also affect food labels exported or imported to or from the United Kingdom.

Fortunately, this will not happen immediately, at least there is a transition clause in place that gives companies until December 31, 2020 to make necessary adjustments.

Important changes include:

  • EU Health and Identification marks for products of animal origin will no longer be valid in the UK;
  • the label must show an importer with a UK address;
  • the EU Organic label will no longer be valid in the UK;
  • origin marking; foods produced in the United Kingdom may no longer be labeled "of EU origin.

The UK government has launched a website outlining the implications for food labeling: . This website is updated regularly.

If you would like assistance with the necessary changes to your labels, please contact our Regulatory Affairs Helpdesk RAsupport@precongroup.com.

Our consultants can work with you to create a plan of action for the transition after March 29, 2019.
