Ban E171 (titanium dioxide) near

The report of the May 18, 2021 meeting of the EC Commission Additives Working Group discussed the action to be taken in response to EFSA's new opinion on E171 (titanium dioxide). EFSA concludes that it cannot be excluded that E171 is harmful. Therefore, the safety of E171 cannot be confirmed. The Commission issued a proposal to ban the use of E171 in food. All member states indicated that they could support a ban on E171.

The substance will not be banned immediately, but E171 will be phased out. It is not yet known how long the time frame will be for the phase-out. However, the Commission does propose a short transition period. The Commission expects to come up with a proposal by the end of July that will then be voted on by member states in September.

So it will be some time before E171 is legally banned. In addition, E171 will be phased out which means that this substance will soon be phased out. However, if you are about to modify your labels or packaging, it may be a good time to look for an alternative to E171 immediately so that this modification can be taken into account.
