Since Jan. 1, 2021, the United Kingdom (UK) has officially left the European Union (EU), making it legally considered a "third country" by the EU. This results in new labeling rules for food exports to the UK. The legal transition period, which was extended last year due to concerns about costs, has now expired.
From Jan. 1, 2024, food labels sold in Britain must conform to British national legislation, including retained EU legislation. Existing food labels that comply with EU legislation will no longer be allowed on the UK market. For Northern Ireland, under the Northern Ireland Protocol, EU legislation remains in force.
