Update: Labeling after the Brexit

Since Jan. 1, 2021, the United Kingdom (UK) has officially left the European Union (EU), making it legally considered a "third country" by the EU. This results in new labeling rules for food exports to the UK. The legal transition period, which was extended last year due to concerns about costs, has now expired.

From Jan. 1, 2024, food labels sold in Britain must conform to British national legislation, including retained EU legislation. Existing food labels that comply with EU legislation will no longer be allowed on the UK market. For Northern Ireland, under the Northern Ireland Protocol, EU legislation remains in force.

This article lists the three most important changes:

  1. Food business operator's address: Prepackaged food sold in Great Britain must have a UK address. This is the address of the food business operator in Great Britain. If the operator is not based in Great Britain, the address of the importer based in the UK must be given. After all, this is the one responsible for the food information.
  2. References to EU: References to the EU such as ''EU'' and ''non-EU'', on products such as beef and veal, minced meat, blends of olive oil, eggs and vegetables and roe, must be converted to ''UK'' and ''non-UK''. Labeling of pre-honey blends sold in Scotland may continue to refer to trading blocks including EU and non-EU.
  3. Organic products: Importers of organic products must be certified by a UK control body. The label must show the code number of the control body and a declaration of agricultural origin (''UK / non-UK Agriculture''). The EU organic logo may continue to be used on organic foods. In this case, an EU declaration of agricultural origin (''EU'' or ''Non-EU Agriculture'') must appear in addition to a UK declaration of agricultural origin.

In addition, national UK legislation includes labeling rules for certain specific product groups that differ from EU legislation. These rules can be found on the british government website.
