A lot is written on social media and blogs about how to use vitamins to combat Coronavirus. This often includes a link to nutritional supplements. These are touted with the claim that they benefit your immune system. The Nutrition Center indicates that taking more vitamins does not give you a higher resistance nor does it make you more resistant to viruses such as Corona. The NVWA issued a public warning last week that such claims are misleading to consumers and are also prohibited by law.
The use of claims on food is strictly regulated at the European level in Regulation (EU) No. 1924/2006. A distinction is made between nutrition claims and health claims. The latter is the case above: it is claimed that certain vitamins help prevent Corona. However, the use of a health claim is only allowed if it is scientifically proven and approved by EFSA.
For example, there are approved claims in relation to the immune system for the minerals iron, copper, zinc and selenium and vitamins A, B6, B11, B12, C and D. The claim that has been approved is 'contributes to the normal functioning of the immune system'. It may only be used under the conditions that the food is at least 'a source' of the mineral or vitamin in question as referred to in the Annex of Regulation (EU) No. 1924/2006. In addition, the importance of a varied, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle should always be emphasized. Especially in times like these, this is only good advice!
