How do you work food safety as a maintenance technician? 7 tips!

Did you know that as a maintenance technician, you can inadvertently cause contamination during maintenance and repair work? When you start work in a food company, it is essential to strictly follow food safety rules. After all, companies want to prevent unsafe products from reaching customers. We give you 7 tips for working food safely.

1. Work clean and tidy and don't leave a mess

Cleaning up packaging and spills immediately prevents contamination. This ensures the company that the finished product is safe for use.

2. Maintain good personal hygiene

Wash your hands regularly and wear company clothing when necessary. This ensures that you don't accidentally bring dirt into production.

3. Clean your tools before and after use

This applies not only to you, but also to the tools you bring in and use. By cleaning tools properly, you prevent cross-contamination.

4. Clean the inside of machines thoroughly

Did you know that you are usually the only person in the company who can reach the inside of machines? Dirt and product residue can also get into the inside of equipment. Therefore, after your work, don't forget to have the inside of the machines cleaned. This way you prevent a food safety hazard.

5. Use the right lubricant and don't use too much

In many food plants, only food-grade lubricants are allowed. These are agents that pose a lesser risk to food safety.

6. Repair damages to prevent pests

Pests can enter a building through gaps or open doors. So pay close attention to holes and gaps during maintenance and pay close attention to whether roller doors, for example, close completely. This is how a business can keep pests out.

7. Use proper materials and forms during repair work

Did you know that you can use steel well to repair a machine or part, but it is better not to use zinc? Zinc is soft and so it easily scratches this material in which product can remain. Moreover, zinc is difficult to clean. So this presents a food safety hazard.
