FSSC publishes version 6 of the FSSC 22000 scheme

On March 31, 2023, Foundation FSSC published version 6 of the FSSC 22000 scheme. The first audits of version 6 will begin from April 01, 2024, and all organizations must complete the upgrade audit to version 6 by March 31, 2025. What can you expect from FSSC 22000 version 6?

The main reasons for the updated version of the FSSC 22000 scheme include integrating the requirements from ISO 22003-1:2022, strengthening the requirements to support organizations in their contributions to achieving the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and incorporating feedback resulting from the Version 6 development survey, which received nearly 2,000 responses.

Overview of key changes:

  • Realignment of Food Chain Categories in accordance with ISO 22003-1:2022;
  • The scope was expanded to include Trading and Brokering (FII) and reduced by removing Farming and FSSC 22000-Quality from the scheme;
  • Integration of food safety and quality culture requirements;
  • New requirements on quality control, food loss and waste and equipment management.
  • The existing additional requirements in Part 2 of the schedule have been strengthened to include allergen management and environmental monitoring.
  • Changes to, and clarification of, requirements for the certification process.
  • Addition of a QR code on FSSC 22000 certificates for improved traceability.

Transition period of 12 months

Version 6 has a 12-month transition period to allow organizations to prepare for the new version and CIs to implement and obtain accreditation. The Version 6 outline documents, the upgrade process and the version with key changes are available for free download on the FSSC website.
