Claims on food are and remain a hot topic. For example, in 2023 the NVWA scrutinized 54 products that contained a protein claim, such as 'high-protein' or 'source of protein'. Almost half of the products did not comply with the rules, and this resulted in warnings and fines for the companies concerned.
In addition to nutrition and health claims, sustainability claims are also under a magnifying glass. For example, two Dutch supermarket chains recently removed sustainability claims after being reprimanded by the Consumer and Market Authority. The claims were not properly substantiated and in some cases outdated.
