Sustainable export ofspices with NABC.
What is the trigger?
The world spice market is growing rapidly. Africa produces 12% of the world's spices. The continent consumes most of its spices locally, over 20% are exported to Asia, but only 2% find their way to the European Union (EU). This presents a great opportunity for Tanzania's spice farmers and trade with the EU.
Improve quality management.
The NABC's goal with its New Origins Sustainable Spices (NOSS) project in Tanzania and Madagascar is to improve quality management and increase spice exports to the EU.
Blended learning
In the NOSS project, Précon consultants are working with European importers and local business organizations and traders in Tanzania and Madagascar to improve and expand spice supply chains. In Tanzania, the focus is on cinnamon, cardamom, dried ginger and chili; in Madagascar, the focus is also on cloves. Précon provides insight into product requirements, food safety requirements and HACCP rules appropriate to the European market. Together with the NABC, local partners and the local team, training programs have been set up to help exporters and traders, processors and farmers gain that knowledge.
The training program used blended-learning, a combination of e-learning, online workshops, self-assessments and individual sessions. The focus is on topics such as GMP, ISO 22000, PRPs and OPRPs, HACCP and further development of the participants' existing quality manuals. In addition, investments have been made in the development of practical manuals and specifications for the cultivation and processing of spices. Instructional posters and videos were also developed that visualize the production of cinnamon and cardamom, from the local farmer to the European importer. And webinars and interactive sessions were held to identify needs and gaps within the local market to raise awareness of European requirements for exports. A great, complete way to help develop the export chain for dried spices in Tanzania and Madagascar.
